‘Whatever Happened to Don Cupitt?: A Brief Stocktake of British Anglican Theology Today’

The Swiss Theologian Karl Barth once described English Theology as ‘Garden Gnome Theology’, but recent decades have seen several lively and internationally influential movements in British theology give the lie to this description. Similarly, even if Don Cupitt was right to remark on faith’s 'long, withdrawing roar' in the 1980s, his proposed non-realist response to that ebb has not found many disciples in the decades that have followed. Instead, a range of vigorous theological projects have flourished. In this talk, Professor Quash will examine some distinctively Anglican examples, including Radical Orthodoxy, various new experiments in natural theology (from David Brown to Alister McGrath), and the role of a Coleridgean tradition and of Scriptural Reasoning in an Anglican post liberalism.
