South of England Show is back… and so is Sanctuary
THE South of England Show was cancelled last year due to Covid but the show committee has decided to go ahead with plans for this summer.
For the first time in its history the show will take place from Friday to Sunday, June 11 to June 13. Traditionally it is from Thursday to Saturday.
Rev Sue Wilkinson will once again be co-ordinating the Sanctuary area. This space is staffed by representatives from the diocese and wider faith communities.
Sue said: “We are delighted to be back at the showground again this year. Visitors and the showground staff have appreciated the presence of the Sanctuary space and we consistently get positive feedback.
“The Sanctuary is a relaxed area staffed by a small team with hot drinks available from our friends at the Salvation Army catering van and a place to rest weary feet. We operate as a safe space for any lost people with the support of the show ground personnel.
“Books Alive book shop, based in Hove, will also be joining us again and we will have the usual area for baby changing.
“The Sanctuary in its current set-up has been going for five years now but the church has always had a presence at the show from the very beginning. It celebrated 50 years in 2017.
“The show has always been an excellent opportunity for outreach, to both visitors and stall holders. Visiting clergy and faith leaders from other Christian denominations come along to help take the Church out into the wider community by being present and often being asked to judge a competition, get involved in the education hub or to sample some of the fine foods from local producers.
“This year we will see some changes to accommodate the Covid restrictions. Sadly, we had to stand down our refreshments and washing-up teams because Salvation Army need to use their own teams using takeaway cups.
“But, be assured you will receive a warm welcome from the team.”
