St Richard's Day, also known locally as Sussex Day. The occasion has become known for celebrating the life of East and West Sussex.

The Shrine of St Richard at the Cathedral, contains the Saint's relics behind the High Altar, and is considered by some to be the third most important in the land, after the shrines of St Thomas à Becket at Canterbury and Our Lady at Walsingham. Over the centuries, it has drawn many to the city and today remains a space for prayer and reflection.

Last year the Cathedral  also developed a Virtual Pilgrimage, from the Cathedral’s West Door to the historic Shrine. This is an opportunity to discover more about the well-trodden route and the history of the many Chapels, objects and art along the way, and also - we hope - to be a source of comfort and hope for you at home. A prayer for St Richard's Day.

Eternal God,

you called St Richard to proclaim your glory

in a life of prayer and pastoral zeal:

keep the leaders of your Church faithful

and bless your people through their ministry,

that the Church may grow into the full stature

of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen
