Remembrance Sunday observed across Sussex
Remembrance Sunday was observed in our churches across the Diocese yesterday.
Many people turned out to watch from the Old Steine, Brighton as representatives from the Armed Forces laid wreaths at the war memorial to mark the day. Hymns and prayers were also led by Bishop Will and The Last Post was played.
Rev James Vine led the village community parade at the Armistice service on Saturday in East Hoathly and again for the Remembrance parade on Sunday.
Other services included, St Peter’s Henfield, where Year 6 pupils visited the Church on Friday 10th November to Remember. They read beautifully and the poems were powerful.
Friends of St Mary's Churchyard, Whyke Chichester, remembered those who died during the World Wars and subsequent conflicts. Six servicemen are buried at St Mary's Churchyard. Wreaths were laid during the morning’s Act of Remembrance on behalf of St John the Evangelist, Preston Brighton and & Bowley & Gallagher
At St Andrew’s Eastbourne, along with silhouettes, poppies decorated the church, and the waterfall below was decorated with 114 red poppies, one for each name on the church’s memorial board from the First World War.
St Mary’s Battle service was led by The dean of Battle, The Very Reverend Lee Duckett, with civic dignitaries including High Sheriff of East Sussex and Huw Merriman MP as well as local societies and schools represented.
Children help local fallen RAF pilots to be remembered.
RAF pilot, Basil Fisher and his older brother Antony Fisher, were remembered during the Remembrance Sunday service at St Mary Our Lady Church (Sidlesham).
