Rector of St Pancras and St John's, Chichester

St Pancras (and St John's) is a lively evangelical church based in the heart of Chichester with members drawn from conservative and charismatic streams.

Together we are seeking to grow closer to Jesus Christ and to reach out to others with the good news of the Gospel. We come from across the city and beyond and include a good number of university students. We are working towards a major building redevelopment project which will help us to expand our ministry.

The church has a long-standing evangelical ministry with clear Biblical teaching. Our average Sunday attendance is around 140 which requires two services as the church building is not large.

Key areas which we would like our new incumbent to help us to develop are:

    • Strengthening our outreach.
    • Building our work with children and young people.
    • Helping with discipleship and practical Christian living.
    • Encouraging openness to the Holy Spirit.
    • Developing effective practical support for those in need.
    • Building interest and support for overseas mission.

We would like our new incumbent to be someone who:

    • Loves the Lord and is grounded in prayer.
    • Is compassionate and approachable.
    • Is committed to the authority of the Bible and is a gifted communicator of biblical truth and its application.
    • Has previous leadership experience and the ability to discern God’s leading.
    • Is passionate about church growth and has a heart for reaching families.
    • Has sensitivity to lead people into God’s presences and foster the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
    • Is committed to identifying, developing and releasing leadership and ministry capacity in others.
    • Has the ability to guide a major building development project.

Services are informal with contemporary music led by a variety of gifted musicians. The number of children is quite small and is an area that needs to be developed. Our lay worker has a particular focus on supporting university students of whom about 20 come to services.

Mid-week we have seven homegroups and also hold regular men’s breakfasts, ladies’ coffee mornings and occasional short courses. We also run a very successful parent and toddler group. A mid-week children’s club is planned to restart in mid-autumn and an Alpha Course after Christmas. We support a number of overseas mission groups, some of which are very long-standing links.

The parish of St Pancras stretches north east from near the city centre to its edge. It has a wide social spread from significant deprivation to relative affluence. It includes the city’s university and hospital.
